Nest vs Ecobee: Which Smart Thermostat Is Better for UAE Homes?

October 04, 2026 · By Smarty Gear · 4 min read

Google Nest and Ecobee are the two smart thermostats we install most in the UAE. Both cut AC bills, both work from your phone, and both need the same kind of professional wiring to work with a Dubai or Abu Dhabi air-conditioning system. The differences are in sensors, voice assistants, HomeKit support and price. This guide compares them for UAE homes specifically.

Short answer: choose Nest if you live in Google Home or Android and want the cleanest design. Choose Ecobee if you use Apple HomeKit, want a built-in room sensor, or need the best multi-room balancing in a large villa.

The one thing that matters most in the UAE: your AC type

Both thermostats are built for 24-volt American heating and cooling systems. Most UAE apartments and many villas use 220-volt fan coil unit (FCU) thermostats, and newer villas often have VRF systems from Daikin, Mitsubishi or LG. Neither Nest nor Ecobee connects to these directly.

That is why every installation we do starts with a free AC compatibility check. The outcome is one of three:

  1. 24V system (common in older villas with American-style AC): standard installation. Nest from AED 450, Ecobee from AED 500.
  2. 220V FCU thermostat: we fit a 24V conversion relay behind the thermostat. Same price band as standard in most cases.
  3. VRF or ducted system with a branded controller: we fit a smart adapter that lets the thermostat control the AC properly. Nest from AED 850, Ecobee from AED 950, including the adapter.

Send a photo of your current thermostat on WhatsApp and we will tell you which one you have before you buy anything.

Where Nest wins

  • Design. The 4th Gen has the largest, clearest display of any thermostat, and it looks like a piece of jewellery on the wall.
  • Google Home. If your home runs on Google speakers and Android phones, Nest is the natural fit.
  • Simplicity. Fewer settings, less to learn. Good for families who want it to just work.

Where Ecobee wins

  • Apple homes. Native HomeKit means Siri, the Home app and automations with your other Apple devices.
  • Large villas. SmartSensors detect which rooms are occupied and balance comfort accordingly. You can add more sensors for bedrooms and majlis.
  • Air quality. The Premium shows humidity, VOCs and air quality on the thermostat, useful in sealed, air-conditioned homes.
  • Built-in Alexa and Siri. The thermostat is also a voice assistant and speaker.

Energy savings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Both brands quote savings of around 10 to 15 percent on cooling, and in the UAE cooling is most of the bill. The savings come from three things: schedules that stop cooling empty rooms, geofencing that lowers the AC when everyone is out, and eco modes during the day. A villa paying AED 2,000 a month to DEWA or ADDC in summer can expect to recover the thermostat cost within one season.
