Nest and Ecobee with VRF, Ducted and FCU Air Conditioning: UAE Compatibility Guide
Most villas and many apartments in the UAE run on VRF or ducted air-conditioning from Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG, Gree, Carrier or Trane, with the brand's own wall controller. Google Nest and Ecobee thermostats cannot connect to these systems directly. They can still be installed, and we do it every week, but it needs the right adapter and the right wiring. This guide explains what works, what does not, and what it costs.
First, identify your system
| What is on your wall | System type | Can Nest or Ecobee be installed? |
|---|---|---|
| Simple round or square dial thermostat, 220V | FCU (fan coil unit), chilled water or DX | Yes, with a 24V conversion relay |
| Thermostat with a fan speed switch (low, medium, high) | FCU with 3-speed fan | Yes, with a relay; fan control is single speed unless we fit a multi-speed relay |
| Branded wired controller with a screen (Daikin BRC, Mitsubishi PAR, LG PREMTB) | VRF or ducted inverter | Yes, with a smart adapter (gateway) between the thermostat and the AC |
| Thermostat with letters like R, W, Y, G, C on the terminals | 24V system (American style) | Yes, direct install |
| Remote control only (split unit on the wall) | Split AC | Not with Nest or Ecobee; use a smart IR controller instead |
Why Nest and Ecobee need an adapter in the UAE
Both thermostats are designed for 24-volt control circuits. UAE FCU thermostats switch 220V directly, and VRF controllers talk to the indoor unit over the manufacturer's own data protocol. Connecting a Nest or Ecobee straight to either will damage the thermostat and can damage the AC board.
The fix is a small device behind the thermostat:
- 24V relay for FCU systems: converts the thermostat's 24V signals into 220V switching for the valve and fan. Hidden in the wall box.
- Smart adapter (VRF gateway) for Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG and similar: translates the thermostat's signals into the manufacturer's protocol so the indoor unit responds to temperature, mode and fan commands properly.
Brand by brand
| AC brand | Typical UAE system | Solution | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daikin | VRV, ducted inverter, FCU | Smart adapter for VRV/ducted; relay for FCU | Most common in Dubai villas; adapter works with BRC controllers |
| Mitsubishi Electric | City Multi VRF, ducted | Smart adapter | Keeps the PAR controller as backup if required |
| LG | Multi V VRF, ducted | Smart adapter | Adapter replaces or sits beside the PREMTB controller |
| Gree, Midea, Carrier, Trane, York | Ducted or FCU | Adapter or relay depending on controller | We confirm from a photo of the controller |
| Chilled water (Emaar, Nakheel, many towers) | FCU with 220V thermostat | 24V relay | The most straightforward installation in apartments |
What you get after installation
- Temperature and mode control from the Nest or Ecobee app, anywhere.
- Schedules, geofencing and eco mode, which is where the 10 to 15 percent cooling savings come from.
- Voice control through Google, Alexa or Siri.
- On VRF systems with the adapter: proper setpoint control, not just on and off.
One limit to know: on a 3-speed FCU, a standard relay runs the fan at one speed. If you want the thermostat to change fan speed automatically, ask for the multi-speed relay option.
Cost
| Installation type | Nest | Ecobee |
|---|---|---|
| 24V system or FCU with relay | from AED 450 | from AED 500 |
| VRF or ducted with smart adapter | from AED 850 | from AED 950 |
Prices include the relay or adapter and are current as of October 2026. Device prices and three worked examples are in our smart thermostat cost guide.
